What To Do When Your Pet Bird Gets Sick

Like other pets, your bird can get sick but unlike other pets your birds illness can become serious, even life-threatening, very quickly. If your bird is acting even the slightest bit ill you should get him to your veterinarian right away since birds can go downhill very fast.
Sometimes, however you can get your bird to the veterinarian right away so here are some steps you can take to help care for your sick bird.
first off, you want make sure that you sick bird stays warm. Keep his cage out of many drafts and you might want to try using a grow light ( the same kind you use to grow plants) aimed at the cage but placed in such a way so that your bird can get out of the direct light if he gets too hot.
If you find that your bird is just sitting on the bottom of the cage and is to sick to even sit on his perch, then you might want to move into a hospital cage for better safety. A glass aquarium can make a great hospital cage. Put a towel or some newspaper on the bottom of the cage and put shallow bowls of food and water where your bird can get to it. Newspaper can be kind of slippery so you want to put something that has a little more grit like paper towels on the bottom so that your bird isn’t sliding around.
If you can get a freestanding low perch in the aquarium this is perfect in case you bird wants to perch. Position the light so that It shines and to only one side so that the bird can get out of it if he gets too hot.
if you don’t have an anti-aquarium readily available than you can make a few changes to your bird’s regular cage. Cover most of it with a towel to keep in the heat input the birds food and water dishes on the bottom of the cage where he can get to them. Also, if you have a freestanding parts put this on the bottom two.
You’ve got to make sure that your bird keeps up his strength as he can easily become weakened by lack of food and water. electrolytes can give your sick bird some quick energy and if he is a hand fed bird then you might see if he’ll try taking a few drops of a sports drink from a spoon or eyedropper. If you have a hand feeding formula ready mix that up with some of the sport strength instead of water and see If you’ll take that. if you bird is eating on his own make sure that he’s getting enough and maybe offer him a tree like a spray millet so that he can get some quick energy. Make sure he also gets enough water.
If you bird is bleeding you need to provide emergency care before you can get them to the vet. Look him over to see where the blood is coming from. While most others do not bleed new feathers that are still growing can bleed. These occult blood feathers and if you do find that the blood is coming from one you’ll need to pull the feather out completely. It’s a good idea to cover your birds head with a towel while you are doing this. If it’s not a feather that’s bleeding check his nails and toes and if it’s coming from they are applied to styptic powder to the cut. If you don’t have styptic powder handy you can use flour In a pinch.
The key to successfully treating your sick bird is getting him to the vet at the first sign of illness. Be sure that you’re always watching your bird in checking him for signs of illness. If you notice that your bird Is acting a little different or even look sick it’s best to call your bet and get them in right away. It may be that nothing is really wrong with your bird but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Bird Feeding Wild Birds – Squirrel Free Bird Feeders
One of the most common problems that a bird feeder may encounter is squirrel infestation. Though squirrels are enjoyable animals to see, they are not always welcome to a bird feeders territory. These little creatures are quite infamous for wreaking havoc on the bird feeders. They not only waste the expensive birdseeds stored to attract wild birds, they also scare away their winged rivals and make a mess of the bird feeder itself.

What kind of heating lamp should I use for my sick parakeet?

I have heard that ill birds have a hard time keeping warm. From some comments I have read, I understand that heating lamps can be used to warm up birds. My parakeet seems to have a tumor, and he is puffy all the time, as if he is always cold. What kind of heating lamp should I use for my parakeet? How many watts should the bulb be? How long should the lamp remain on? How close to the cage should i put the lamp?

Is Your Pet Bird Sick – Learn How To Understand The Signs

For any family with a pet, you realize how important they can become for your household. And pet birds in many cases are amongst some of the most popular pets that one could obtain. If yours is a family that has a lot of responsibilities and not a lot of time to devote to a pet such as the amount that it takes for a dog or a cat, then having a bird is perfect, because as long as you do just a few things for them they are fine.
However, like all animals, birds might get sick, and because they are less common than cats and dogs, and because you are going to interact with your bird much less than your cat or dog, you might find it difficult to tell when your bird is sick. Fortunately though, there are some things that can be done to help you to pay closer attention to the bird that will help you to be aware if it becomes ill.
If you are familiar with the song that your bird sings, then you will know without a doubt when the bird is not feeling well. Singing is the way that birds communicate with the outside world. Depending on the time of the day and how the bird is feeling it will make different sounds accordingly as you will see by paying attention to it. There are birds who have diverse songs for both the morning and the evening. Also, your bird might make noises when it sees you, or sees other members of the family.
There will be diverse sounds for all of their activities in the cage as well like changing the food and water. It will become your responsibility as a pet owner to take the time and understand these variations in your pet. That way, you can notice when they change. If your bird stops making the noises that they have always made, or makes new noises you have never heard before, they might be sick.
Another thing that you should be able to begin recognizing is the movements of your bird. The bird will develop patterns of the places in the cage that it likes to perch the best and the types of activities that it enjoys doing.
If you have been paying attention to your bird and know what it’s habits are you will know to pay attention to it when these behaviors change like for example it hanging out on the floor of it’s cage rather than on its favorite perch. Your bird could also be sick if it starts acting frantic and overactive and keeps trying to get out of the cage. If this is the case something needs to be done for it. Don’t hesitate to take your bird to the vet if you are in doubt.

What All Should You Know When You Are Buying Parrots As Your Pets?
You can either buy a parrot from a regular pet store, a specialized breeder or an owner looking to sell their bird. Can My Pet Bird Make Me Or My Kids Sick?
July 30, 2010 by
Yes, your pet bird can potentially get you or your child sick. Infectious diseases that can be transmitted between humans and animals are called zoonotic. Unfortunately, birds can carry at lease five different serious illnesses. Not all birds carry disease but the potential is there so you must be cautious, especially with very young children, very old people and immune system compromised people. Immune compromised people would include organ transplant recipients, people in chemotherapy and HIV infected people.
If you think that you or your child has been exposed to or is suffering from any bird disease, your smart move is to consult your physician who can help pinpoint the cause and prescribe proper treatment. This article is for your additional information only. I feel that it is always smart to do your homework before you consult your physician. The more help you can offer your physician on his diagnosis of a problem the better.
First, to help avoid exposure to potential disease, cleanliness counts. To best protect yourself from getting sick, thoroughly wash your hands with running water and soap after contact with birds or their droppings.
Some people use rubber gloves and a mask when cleaning birdcages and habitats. Disinfect the sink after you wash bird toys, perches and food bowls. Do not share bites of food with your pet bird, if you might be swapping saliva. Common sense goes a long way in helping to avoid exposure.
The five diseases that can be carried by birds are Salmonella, Chlamydia psittaci , Avian Tuberculosis, HistoPlasmosis and Cryptoccus. I will explain each disease.
*Salmonella is a bacterial disease associated with many birds, especially chickens, baby chicks, and ducklings. Salmonella live in the intestinal tracts of some birds, humans and other animals. Salmonella can be found in the feces of some pets, and people can become infected if they do not wash their hands after contact with these feces. There are approximately 40,000 human cases of salmonellosis per year in the United States (not all contracted from birds) and about 600 of those infected die. Salmonella causes vomiting and diarrhea and sometimes fever. Salmonella infections usually resolve in 5-7 days and often do not require treatment unless the patient becomes severely dehydrated or the infection spreads from the intestines. Persons with severe diarrhea may require rehydration, often with intravenous fluids. Antibiotics are not usually necessary unless the infection spreads from the intestines, then it can be treated with ampicillin, gentamicin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, or ciprofloxacin.
*Chlamydia psittaci, often referred to as parrot fever or avian chlamydiosis (AC), is an important cause of systemic illness in birds kept as pets and in poultry. This disease has been isolated in 129 bird species, and parakeets, parrots, macaws, cockatiels, pigeons, doves, and mynah birds are the most likely carriers. Birds may carry this disease for years without showing signs of it. Birds that show the disease may have a respiratory infection, eye discharge, lethargy and diarrhea. Human infection with C. psittaci usually occurs through the inhalation of aerosolized contaminated bird urine, respiratory secretions, or dried feces of infected birds. Other sources of exposure can include bird bites, mouth-to-beak contact, and handling the plumage and tissues of infected birds. Treatment includes Tetracyclines are the drugs of choice for treating psittacosis in humans
*Avian Tuberculosis can affect all species of birds. The signs of Avian TB in birds are diarrhea, dull plumage, lethargy and gradual wasting away, even if the birds appetite is good. Avian TB can be transmitted to humans via ingestion or inhalation of contaminated feces. The contaminated feces can persist in the environment for many years. When cleaning a potentially sick bird, it is best to wear rubber gloves, goggles and a face mask. Always wash arms up to elbows with antiseptic soap even after wearing gloves. People are generally very resistant to these infections.
*HistoPlasmosis is a fungus that can be found in earth rich with bird droppings. Transmission to human can occur when they breathe in dust loaded with the fungus. This disease can cause a short term lung infection. This infection generally clears up by itself as long as the infected person has normal immune responses. Fungus killing medicines may be used if the infection is stubborn.
* Cryptococcus is found in the droppings of wild birds (such as pigeons). When dried bird droppings are stirred up, this can make dust containing Cryptococcus go into the air and be breathed by people. Pets, such as dogs and cats, can also get sick with cryptococcosis from this dust, but people do not get cryptococcosis from dogs and cats. Most people do not get sick with cryptococcosis, but some people, especially those immune compromised with HIV infection are at danger. For these people, cryptococcosis can cause serious symptoms of brain and spinal cord disease, such as headaches, dizziness, sleepiness, and confusion.

How do you cure a sick parakeet?
March 23, 2010 by
I have a parakeet who’s sick. It hardly eats, it sleeps much of the time with it’s head on it’s back and every time it ruffles it’s feathers. It also won’t drink much water, though both fresh food and water are readily available. It also can’t stand too long or too well. Every time it tries to walk or shakes itself, it falls over. I put medicine for birds in it’s water each day, and also add 3 drops of a special bird vitamin per fluid ounce of water and per ounce of food. Please tell me what I can do to make the parakeet stronger and healtier. I’m at a loss of what I can do for it.
