Parrots are a lifetime investment and the care of these magnificent birds is very essential to their health and happiness. Since some birds in the parrot family can live up to 50 years, an investment in parrots and how to care for them is often compared to caring for children. If this is something that does not interest you, then you may not want to own a bird.

There are an estimated 11 million pet birds in the United States alone with the majority owning a Parrot. The birds in the parrot family will include birds as small as parakeets and love birds to cockatoos and Macaws, the Macaw being the largest bird in the parrot family.

There are many different species of parrots. An African grey parrot grows to be about 13 inches, and he’s one of the birds who has a longer life. He is also known for his capabilities to mimic all sorts of sounds, in addition to developing and parroting speech patterns.

The parakeet are among the best known of the parrot species. Another species is the Australian “budgie.” This nickname is given to the budgerigar, a brilliant green and yellow variety of parrot. They are gentle and friendly.

An Amazon parrot has 27 subspecies. This parrot has short wings but is every bit as smart as a dolphin or a monkey. He is also an expert at imitating a wide range of sounds.

These are only some of the many species of parrots. Owning a parrot is an excellent alternative over other pets for those individuals who do not prefer the traditional dogs or cats, reptiles or others.

So what sort of cage should you buy for your new parrot? Regardless of whether you’re expecting to adopt a smaller bird or a larger of the parrot species, my suggestion is to buy the largest, practical cage that your budget can afford. The bigger the cage, the more freedom he will experience and the more comfortable he will be.

In relation to your parrot’s health, his appearance is telling. His plumage should look healthy, meaning the coloring should be bright and smooth. Additionally, he should be clean. That is, there should be no dirt hanging for his feet or his beak.

Before you purchase a parrot, you should get a clear understanding of the types of routine parrot care that is needed, medical care for parrots, understand parrot types and their personalities and which size parrot would best fit your wants and needs.

Become well educated in the ownership and care of these wonderful birds and you will be enjoying your new parrot in no time.

No matter what kind of bird you have as a pet, there are a lot of important things that most people overlook when it comes to their care. Proper pet bird care is something that every bird owner needs to be educated about.

One of the most basic, yet important things to know is that the size of the bird, determines the size of the cage. Some people buy cages that are actually too small for the bird they have, either because they are just cheaper, or they do not have room for a larger cage. Keeping a pet bird in a cage that’s too small, is detrimental to a birds health. Birds are easily stressed when caged, and a cage that is too small will certainly intensify the stress level. Obtain a cage that the bird can move around in, and perhaps by able to actually spread its wings to allow for exercise. Anything larger is a plus, and your bird will be very happy about it.

There have been many cases of a bird owner waking up one morning, only to find his bird dead for no apparent reason. The fact of the matter is, that the bird had more than likely been sick for quite sometime and the owner just didn’t notice it. Unless you keep a close eye on your bird, and know what to look for as far as the signs and symptoms of illness, it could easily go unnoticed. Birds have a way of hiding illness, and often times, by the time you start to see the signs of something being wrong, it’s too late.

Pet birds aren’t for everyone, and if you don’t plan on getting a guide book on caring for birds, or educating yourself about birds, it’s probably best not to get one. Birds are very delicate animals, both mentally and physically, and they demand proper care around the clock to be happy and healthy.

The Basics Of Parrot Cages

People who decide to have pets at home should provide suitable housing for the animal. This means getting one that is proportion to the size and type of parrot because this will greatly affect the lifespan of the bird.

It is advisable to get one that is very large. Most of these birds prefer to climb, stretch and play so there must be enough space for the parrot to do this inside instead of it just sitting on a perch located inside the cage.

The housing should have horizontal bars. This will make it easy for the parrot to grab hold onto the sides whenever it feels like climbing inside the cage. The distance between each bar should also be checked so that the bird will not injure itself during this activity.

Though its true there are some cheap cages that can be found in the market, the owner must not get this based on this criteria alone. This is because the material used in making the cage will not be of good quality that may also pose as a danger for the parrot. It is better then to get an expensive one made of stainless steel or powder coated since these are not toxic to the pet.

Conventional bird cages have doors and latches. People who decide to get a parrot should avoid using this because it can cause injury to the creature’s beak, head, neck or wing. The best to get those are those that are detachable since this has been proven to be safe.

Most animals produce waste. The ideal carrot cage should have a pull out try in the bottom so the owner can just take this off and wash it before putting it back inside. This is better than going inside and to clear the housing of droppings, which will take a long time to clean.

The parrot cage should come have a designated area where the bowl will be placed. Some manufacturers sell this with a plate inside while others have to be purchased separately. This should also be removable because this needs to be cleaned twice a day before and after feeding.

The perch where the parrot sits must be near where the food is located. This will make it easy for the bird to go to when it is time for feeding.

Having a pet big or small is an enormous responsibility. The individual should have a spacious and safe cage to enjoy many years with the parrot.

Be sure to have the basics on how to maintain the parrot’s body temperature in every crucial times of the night, especially if the parrot is on its first week of age.

Some things to remember about general care of baby parrots:

- Do not confuse baby parrots by scaring them
- Provide security and privacy by placing its cage in a corner: one side is facing the wall and the other side on the rest of the room
- Change diet gradually and avoid over feeding
- Never hold a new parrot on its first day of life, but you can start taking it out of the cage for interaction of the third day.
- Monitor the food servings, intake and droppings

A dedicated time of 10 minutes a day is enough to train a baby parrot to respond with simple commands like letting it step. Verbal commands are even better to hasten the interaction.

Parrots are just about one of the most charming species of animals on the planet. You can actually talk to them. Who cares if they are programmed to speak certain words? The organization not only screens the potential owner’s capability to take care and train on basic concepts in caring for parrots, but also the overall environment from which the parrot will be made to grow.

Prices for adoption vary according to size and in line with this, every parrot owner wannabe must be ready for the extra budget that caring for a parrot will require. Aside from the mere enthusiasm of talking to a bird, more serious motivations for parrot adoption (such as the desire to preserve natural life) are also becoming more rampant these days. The more passionate individuals who labored on rescuing the more extinct of these parrot breeds are more than willing to share the rewarding load to people who have a heart for the same cause.

Adults who are often dealt with psychological depressions are often advised to keep a pet. Parrots may be a good choice, since their cheery quips can definitely jolt any person out of his misery. When well-trained, parrots can even help out in their own small ways, i.e. welcoming guests in the home or entertaining them.

Having a pet parrot can also do wonders to kids. However, they need to be well-guided by parents as they do so. If done the right way, parrot adoption for kids may serve to be one of their most rewarding childhood memories. Being responsible for menial tasks such as feeding and training the parrot to speak certain words not only makes any kid happy, but it builds a sense of responsibility which will benefit him or her in the long run and beyond the life span of the parrot itself.
