What To Do When Your Pet Bird Gets Sick

]]>
Like other pets, your bird can get sick but unlike other pets your birds illness can become serious, even life-threatening, very quickly. If your bird is acting even the slightest bit ill you should get him to your veterinarian right away since birds can go downhill very fast.
Sometimes, however you can get your bird to the veterinarian right away so here are some steps you can take to help care for your sick bird.
first off, you want make sure that you sick bird stays warm. Keep his cage out of many drafts and you might want to try using a grow light ( the same kind you use to grow plants) aimed at the cage but placed in such a way so that your bird can get out of the direct light if he gets too hot.
If you find that your bird is just sitting on the bottom of the cage and is to sick to even sit on his perch, then you might want to move into a hospital cage for better safety. A glass aquarium can make a great hospital cage. Put a towel or some newspaper on the bottom of the cage and put shallow bowls of food and water where your bird can get to it. Newspaper can be kind of slippery so you want to put something that has a little more grit like paper towels on the bottom so that your bird isn’t sliding around.
If you can get a freestanding low perch in the aquarium this is perfect in case you bird wants to perch. Position the light so that It shines and to only one side so that the bird can get out of it if he gets too hot.
if you don’t have an anti-aquarium readily available than you can make a few changes to your bird’s regular cage. Cover most of it with a towel to keep in the heat input the birds food and water dishes on the bottom of the cage where he can get to them. Also, if you have a freestanding parts put this on the bottom two.
You’ve got to make sure that your bird keeps up his strength as he can easily become weakened by lack of food and water. electrolytes can give your sick bird some quick energy and if he is a hand fed bird then you might see if he’ll try taking a few drops of a sports drink from a spoon or eyedropper. If you have a hand feeding formula ready mix that up with some of the sport strength instead of water and see If you’ll take that. if you bird is eating on his own make sure that he’s getting enough and maybe offer him a tree like a spray millet so that he can get some quick energy. Make sure he also gets enough water.
If you bird is bleeding you need to provide emergency care before you can get them to the vet. Look him over to see where the blood is coming from. While most others do not bleed new feathers that are still growing can bleed. These occult blood feathers and if you do find that the blood is coming from one you’ll need to pull the feather out completely. It’s a good idea to cover your birds head with a towel while you are doing this. If it’s not a feather that’s bleeding check his nails and toes and if it’s coming from they are applied to styptic powder to the cut. If you don’t have styptic powder handy you can use flour In a pinch.
The key to successfully treating your sick bird is getting him to the vet at the first sign of illness. Be sure that you’re always watching your bird in checking him for signs of illness. If you notice that your bird Is acting a little different or even look sick it’s best to call your bet and get them in right away. It may be that nothing is really wrong with your bird but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Bird Feeding Wild Birds – Squirrel Free Bird Feeders
One of the most common problems that a bird feeder may encounter is squirrel infestation. Though squirrels are enjoyable animals to see, they are not always welcome to a bird feeders territory. These little creatures are quite infamous for wreaking havoc on the bird feeders. They not only waste the expensive birdseeds stored to attract wild birds, they also scare away their winged rivals and make a mess of the bird feeder itself.

A bird cage cover to help your bird sleep
Posted: Jan 14, 2010 |Comments: 0

]]>
People use bird cage cover to allow their birds to sleep undisturbed. Your birds can rest peacefully then and they will not be disturbed by common household lights or noises. Also, cage covers can be a signal for your bird that it’s bedtime and that he has to be quiet.Do not use the bird cage cover for extended hours outside of bedtime or as punishment. This will make your bird unhappy and depressed and damage your bird’s mental health.
Covers could make the things worse in case that your bird is displaying unusual behavior, ‘screaming’ for example. You have to define the problem and to solve it by spending more time with your bird or allowing him more time outdoors. There are a variety of bird cage covers like other bird cage accessories. There are universal covers which fit on any cage.
If there is a possibility your bird being cold during the night, you can choose flannel covers. The type of the cover should not restrict the airflow enough to affect the bird’s breathing.Do not buy vinyl or non ‘breathing’ material. Not all people use covers, but if you notice that your bird does not sleep well, you should try it out. It is normal for birds which have never had their cage covered to bite at or pick at the cover, but if there are loose threads or frayed pieces, replace the cover.
If the cover has been on the bird cage for too long, your bird may pick at it. Usually a parrot needs aapproximately twelve hours of sleep and a bird cage cover can settle a tired bird during bedtime. In our daily routine we do not have twelve hours of sleep, which disturbs bird’s schedules. So if your bird has problems with enough sleeping then the bird cage cover will be the answer.
If your bird is used to sleep with cover, its absence will be a problem. And your bird could become stressed or anxious. If you are buying a bird from an individual, it would be better if you ask him in advance if the bird has used a bird cage cover. And on the other hand, if the bird has not been covered, at first when you cover it, it may become nervous. You can make thing better if you cover him for a couple of hours and slowly and gradually up to a full night’s sleep. Then your bird will be healthy and happy.

Different types of parrots

The main species of parrots are:
Large-sized Parrots:
Amazon parrots – medium to large in size. They are mainly green colored with patches of yellow, red, and blue on their tail, wings, and head. They often chatter when there are strangers around and possess very loud voices. The older male Amazons like the hawk-headed parrots can be aggressive.
Cockatoos – compared to Amazons – most of these are big. They are extremely intelligent, sensitive, and nervous birds. They possess erect crests that is lowered and raised at will. They may look cuddly and cute, but adult cockatoos can inflict painful bites if they are not properly trained. Cockatoos demand and require constant attention and are difficult to take care of.
African Gray Parrots are medium to large in size. They are overly sensitive but very intelligent birds. When strangers are around, they are very quiet, however, they can be extremely loud but do not create noise nuisance. Hand-reared parrots are very prone to feather plucking.
Macaws are the largest sized parrot species. The smaller macaws, like Hahn’s and the yellow-collared, make good pets, but are noisy. They are active, inquisitive and often very mischievous parrots. They can learn to talk and can be very chatty. Their powerful beaks can damage many items around the house, including furniture and can even crush nuts. They are not very suitable for homes with young children. Large Macaws may also require more space instead of just a bird cage.
If you have large birds, such as the above-mentioned as pets, one should go for a large parrot cage. This should have a bar spacing of one or more inches as inappropriate spacing can result in injury to the bird.
Medium sized Parrots:
Conur
es are found in South Africa and are very confident and active birds. Sun yellow and bright orange conures, and blue-crowned and Patagonian conures have very loud and piercing voices. They are extremely curious, but very entertaining too. They can talk but possess squeaky thin voices when they try to emulate human speech. Conures are happy to sleep in roosting boxes placed inside the bird cage.
If you have these medium-sized birds, as pets, you should go for parrot cages which have a bar spacing of a half-inch to 5/8 inch.
Small-sized Parrots:
Parakeets are mostly found in Australia and Asia and are leaf-green colored, and are ground-feeders, and spend most of the time on the bird cage floor. Unlike other parrot species, they are quiet birds, although they are very active and social creatures. They live in a large flock and are usually kept as a flock in an aviary. Parakeets are independent birds and do not mix or bond well with humans. They respond to training but are poor mimics and imitators of human voices and speech.
Lovebirds are active and small parrots with short tails and come from Africa. They are usually kept as pets in pairs, as they rarely bond with human beings as many other parrot species do. They emit shrill sounds and can voice calls at a high volume, but they are unable to copy or imitate human speech. Lovebirds are mostly kept in an aviary, or as a pair in a bird cage, instead of in the company of other birds.
Cockatiels and budgies are the commonest parrot-like birds, and they are from Australia. Budgies are bright green in color with a fine scale-like pattern of white and black markings, but now they come in a variety of myriad colors due to selective breeding over generations. Budgies are easy to keep as pets, but require lots of attention and time with its owner/keeper if they are kept alone. They can talk and learn many phrases and words and make sounds in small, squeaky voices. Budgies are very busy and active birds. Cockatiels are large birds and they are good pets. They are naturally gray with some white on their wings, and orange-yellow patches on their head. They can learn to talk but are loud with harsh voices. They are highly busy and active birds and can be easily taught to obey some commands and requests.
If you have a small parrot such as one of the above-mentioned, you probably require one of the medium sized parrot cages having a half-inch or less bar spacing. One should always get as big a parrot cage as possible as long as he takes care of choosing one with an appropiate bar spacing and orientation.
As with most other birds, parrots enjoy bird toys as they are not just fun but neccessary for all species of parrots, large or small. These toys help keep their minds challenged, their beaks busy and keep them entertained. So make sure to purchase an array of different bird toys for your parrot to enjoy.

Bird Cage Accessories, Bird Toys, Bird Perches, Bird Foods, Bird Water Dishes, Bird Stands
Even if you have already bought a bird cage, there is more to do- you have to decide which accessories you will need. There is usually extra room in the cage, which is left to be used for the accessories. Of course the most important items are food and water dishes, so before buying, consider if they can be disinfected or not.

Pet Bird Room Necessities–3 Things That Every Healthy Bird Room Needs

Making a bird room a happy haven for you and your feathered pets can be fun and exciting. But beyond the basics of fresh food and water, every bird room needs to have the following 3 things to insure a happy, healthy bird.
Proper Housing-Do your research first. Some birds enjoy living together in pairs or groups, some do better living alone. Some get along with other birds, and some not so much. Be sure to find out from a breeder or veterinarian which type of housing is best for your bird and provide a space that fits your birds’ needs. Knowing what your bird will require before you purchase it will save heartbreak later.
Oversize the space you provide for your bird so that they have enough room to spread their wings without hitting and possibly damaging their wings. The bigger the enclosure the better it is for your pet.
Toys for Emotional and Physical Health-Just like people, birds can get bored. They need toys to stimulate their interest. Chews, perches, cuttle bone all keep beaks and feet healthy which can greatly increase their life span and will make your pet a happy member of the family. Toys should be rotated regularly to avoid boredom. And old items that become unsafe should immediately be replaced by new ones.
Keep color and texture in mind when purchasing toys. Brightly colored objects will not only stimulate your pets but will create a visually appealing room for you as bird keeper as well.
Clean Air-Every bird room should have a high efficiency particle arresting (or HEPA) air purifier to clean the air. This type of purifier is specifically designed to remove large to minute particles as small as.3 microns from the air. And the really good news about this type of filtration is that the only by-product is fresh, clean air. And there is no down side to supplying you and your bird with a steady flow of fresh air.
Because bird’s air passages are extremely small and can easily become clogged with dander, feathers, and dust filtering the air is essential for a healthy bird. Clogged air passages are often the first step towards disease and infection. Unfortunately, because birds instinctively hide symptoms of illness, it is often to late to help once you realize your bird is sick.
Keeping airways clear by continually filtering the air in your bird’s room can greatly reduce the chance of disease and infection, increase the life span of your pet, and will surely increase the quality of life from day to day. It will also make breathing easier for those humans in your home whose allergies and asthma are more likely to be triggered by having a bird in the home.

Did you know that Singapore has the largest park for birds in Southeast Asia? Did you also know that parrots are considered the most intuitive, beautiful, intelligent and charming of the birds? Now at the largest park in Asia, the Jurong bird park, you can find the most varied species of parrots. At one single place, you can find parrots from all over the world. Why parrots you might ask. Well parrots are ignored a lot by the people but parrots are the most amazing birds. They have the ability to perform acrobats. They can bend and flex themselves and it is indeed a pleasure to watch them perform.
Parrots also have the ability to talk in the voice of human beings. They can mimic any voice they hear. They are extremely social by nature and are talkative and entertain the people around them completely. Parrots are neither male nor female and they lay their eggs in the wild. Today because of the depletion of forests the natural resources parrots are becoming extinct. To save these splendid creatures and earn revenue Singapore created the Parrots Paradise Singapore. This is housed in the Jurong bird park which hosts all different kinds of birds from around the world.
Parrot Paradise Singapore has about one hector land dedicated to all kinds of parrots and their well being. They house almost 500 parrots with 110 different kinds of species. Here you will be able to see how the parrots behave in their natural form. All the different kinds of species of parrots from any part are given a surrounding they are used to. Hence for a parrot found in the desert the surrounding of the dessert is given to sustain the parrot and make it feel like home. Until now the Parrots Paradise Singapore has bred over 50 species of parrots which is an achievement in itself.
Parrots Paradise is a place you must take your children to. Here the children will find their much wanted quest of knowledge for parrots and other birds. Their knowledge will increase over a fun filled way to learning. Today, in urban places one doesn’t find many parrots especially of different species hence the parrot’s paradise can showcase of the children the times they have been studying about. The children can learn a variety of things about parrots. How they eat their food, how they socialize and how they nest themselves and adapt to the environment. For a change, your children will have the time of their lives and keep talking and thinking about the time spent there for a long time.
There are many birds inhabiting here, from the Sun conure, red sided eclectus parrot, galah cockatoo, blue and gold macaw, military macaw, hyacinth macaw, blue throated macaw to many others which are endangered. All these endangered parrots are housed here for the tourists to learn about them and appreciate their beauty. They can also after looking at them, do their best in any way possible to protect the depleting and endangered nature around them.

Bird trainers have developed skills or techniques, and become experts in understanding the behavioral nature of the parrot. Several books, manuscript, and guidelines in promoting the positive angles to be on the win side in behavioral conquest of the bird have helped a lot of amateurs and pet owners.
Parrots are the most misunderstood birds in existence. It’s up for you to get thru better relationships with your bird, for it is, what you make it so. Before knowing it, at a slightest trait overlook, this bird in your cage could create havocs of anxiety and frustrations in your life. Basically, parrots need real training, otherwise, you will one day find out, it becomes an undesirable annoying character stealing away every bit of your peaceful, chaos-free moments.
Basics in training start with the bird’s character traits and instincts. Your first approach is to notice its biting habits and screaming. These are inherent to parrots especially if it seemed likely to be ignored. Like humans they develop into emotional outburst, and their tendency is to find an object to threw out their fits.
Instinctive biting and screaming loudly distract. Try to find out what causes such behavior. Every bit of undesirable action could be a reaction that actually comes from its surrounding environment, either from your very self, or from anyone among your companions inside the house.
Behavioral Aspects in Training
1. Let us deal into terms similar to psychology in humans.
* Operant conditioning, situation in training, on other domestics or your bird pet; reacting well in order to gain something positive, or to evade from something negative. Example: Directing your bird to whistle, if it mimics the action, you hand in its food. Next time, instinct to eat allows impulsive choice to obey, whatever you want it to do, a whip of your finger, or cue from your mouth.
* Bridging stimulus set an example, when a hand is raised to command the bird to perch in one corner of the cage, the demonstrative actions serve a bridge for the parrot to choose in abeyance following the hand cuing, because a toy is ready at reach.
2. Do not punish pets for any negative attitude or actions done previously.
Example: When it unties cage’s knots (birds do kept biting and untying); long time before you discovered it, don’t whip or deprive it of meals. Birds or animals do not know of past and future. Bird’s instinct is to live or act “here” and “now,” and never aware of anything done ostentatiously. Turn to let a parrot obey you on what it does at the moment.
A large scale of parrot species need to be captivated to insure you with one of the best pet favored by many households. Research where your pet originated in order to pursue utmost care in mutual relationships between humans and birds.

Papillons and the French Connection
With a history dating as far back as the late 1600s, it comes as no surprise that Papillons come from one of the oldest dog breeds. Papillons originally came from France. Back then, the breed was referred to as the Dwarf Spaniel. These dogs had quite petite builds and sported long and silky hair. Nevertheless, perhaps the distinguishing characteristics of Papillons are their butterfly-like ears–thus the name since papillon is the French word for butterfly.
